Panorama is ITALICS' annual exhibition event — a consortium of 55 Italian galleries that each year selects a different territory and builds art itineraries through its spaces, placing contemporary and historic works in dialogue with the landscape. For its third edition and onward, ITALICS came to Giga with a precise need: design the visual identity of the event from the ground up — a mark capable of anchoring a recurring project without ever fixing it to a single place.
The word already contains the problem. Pan- meaning everything, hórama meaning vision — a panorama is an act of looking. It only exists from a specific point of view. The identity had to hold this: a single recognizable mark that could travel through entirely different territories, curators, and themes across every edition, while remaining genuinely open. An aperture. The parenthesis — inverted, facing outward — could perfectly embody this direction. Where conventional brackets close inward, these open. The mark opens toward the thing it holds.
The system is built on three elements in constant reconfiguration: the inverted parentheses ) (, the logotype set in Practice by François Rappo (Optimo), and a per-edition colour drawn from the territory. The parentheses never sit still. They frame a full page or a single letter. They hold a photograph, split across two surfaces, or appear as structural punctuation standing alone. The name builds letter by letter in animation — )P( to )PA( to )PAN( — the way a view unfolds as you walk toward it.Colour is chosen per edition to lift a saturated tone from the territory's own palette until it becomes impossible to ignore against the landscape it comes from.
